Algerian AMEL TAFSOUT is an amazing woman. Director of her Maghreb dance company “The Tafsoutettes”, she has lectured, danced, taught, sung, and conducted anthropological research all over the world; in the UK alone, she has performed at Womad, Glastonbury, The ICA, The Commonwealth Institute, The French Institute, Queen Elizabeth Hall, The South Bank, The Barbican, SOAS and The British Museum. She speaks four languages and has published articles in academic and popular magazines.
Tafsout was fascinated by dance from childhood. Much of her research has focused on ritual and traditional dances from the Maghreb and the Middle East (the dual North African- Arabic personality of Algeria). She has been able to look at the ways in which spirituality is part of daily life, and her work is characterised by a search for harmony between body, mind and spirit.
“Watching a performance by AMEL TAFSOUT is a cathartic experience. She dances from the very core of herself. Sensuality is expressed as power and generosity. She has a direct stare, a presence that only comes from the true knowledge of herself and her art. A unique performer and there is no one else who dances like her.” (Beatrice Parvin, in Habibi Magazine, Vol.18, #1, 1999). She is a wonderful, caring and meticulous teacher … I could go on & on …. INTERNATIONALLY ACCLAIMED INSTRUCTOR & PERFORMER
SABUHA SHAHNAZ
in an evening CONCERT Saturday, April 8, 2006 & a 1-day SEMINAR Sunday, April 9, 2006
TURKISH CIGULI (Roma/Gypsy)
(4 hours of teaching)
11-1:30 Class/ Lunch 1:30-2:30/ 2:30-4:00 Class
(+other folk – if there’s time)
German-born SABUHA SHAHNAZ was fascinated by dance from childhood. Her research focuseS on Oriental and folk dances from the Near and Middle East. She is a truly talented and amazing woman. Director of her own dance company and school in Augsberg, producer of her own videos and a CD, she has danced and conducted research all over Turkey (performed there extensively, including in Istanbul with real Roman musicians!) and Albania (star of several concerts in Tirana) and studied with other experts in areas of Middle Eastern, Mediterranean and North African dance.
One of her favourite styles is Turkish Oriental and Roma. She will teach a choreography to Ciguli/Roma music that includes moves from Turkish folk, Oryantal and Roma dances – a lot of fun to do and so different from classic Egyptian.
Sabuha has been performing for over 23 years and was twice a special guest teacher at Morocco’s Weeklong Intensives. Her performances and classes were so well-received, that the students and audiences are clamoring for her return. Therefore this concert and seminar!
Sabuha speaks fluent English and has published articles in academic and popular German-language dance magazines. Go to her website: http://www.sabuha.de and see some of her rave reviews (there is an English version). She is a wonderful, caring and meticulous teacher … I could go on & on…
